Kate Upton gets Blake Lively’d, critics say Kate’s too cheap & downmarket

Yesterday, I covered Kate Upton’s introduction to the big league – she garnered the cover of this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, which will likely be her biggest calling card for years to come. While I was doing five minutes of research on her, I grew to like her a little bit. She’s only 19 years old, she’s cute, she’s blonde and she has big boobs. She’s not trying to be “deep” or “high fashion” and she’s not trying to convince us she’s something she’s not. It is what it is. Anyway, I was shocked to see that Kate has haters. The day her SI cover was revealed, the New York Times had a judgy piece full of bitchy quotes, all about how Kate isn’t all that and a bag of chips. For the love of God! You can read the full piece here, and here are some highlights:

There was a time, not long ago, when the surest path to modeling stardom was down the runway of a top designer’s show, when it would have been unthinkable to find among the industry’s top ranks a swimsuit girl whose main claims to fame were ad campaigns for Guess jeans and Beach Bunny Swimwear. But that was before social media altered the paths to fame.

Unlike the many little-known beauties now on view at New York Fashion Week — women seldom identified by more than one name (Agata, Hanaa, Frida, Joan) — Kate Upton, just 19 and resembling a 1950s pinup, but with the legs of a W.N.B.A. point guard, has arrived on the scene as a largely self-created Internet phenomenon. It is not just that she has a respectable Twitter following (170,000 people at last count), or a YouTube video with over 3 million viewers, or marketing potential perhaps best measured by her rocketing from obscurity to No. 2 on a list of the world’s 99 “top” women compiled by AskMen.com, an online magazine with 15 million readers. (Sofia Vergara, of the ABC sitcom “Modern Family,” is No. 1.)

“We all know that social media now creates its own reality,” said Wayne Sterling, the publisher of Models.com, an industry Web site. “If you become a YouTube star among teenagers, you have even more recognizability than a TV star,” he said. “Kate Upton is the perfect example of that.”

It was soon after the Dougie video went viral that a seasoned scout, David Cunningham, brought Ms. Upton to the attention of Ivan Bart of IMG Models, the company behind the multimillion-dollar careers of women like Gisele Bündchen, Ms. Klum and Kate Moss.

“When Kate first came in, everyone at the agency thought I was crazy,” Mr. Bart, the “superagent” who heads IMG Models, said of Ms. Upton. “She wasn’t ‘fashion’ enough.”

Mr. Bart signed her anyway. And soon, to the surprise of some in the industry, Ms. Upton was being sought out for editorial sittings with people like Carine Roitfeld, the French fashion eminence known for her prophetic eye, and by Katie Grand, the influential stylist and editor of the fashion-forward British magazine Love. Wholesomely proportioned at 5 feet 11 inches with a 36-25-34 figure, Ms. Upton was a long way from the coolly robotic Eastern European beauty ideal that has dominated the catwalks for many seasons. “Kate is bigger than fashion,” Mr. Bart said. “She’s the Jayne Mansfield of the Internet.”

Those dubious about Ms. Upton’s crossover potential, or of any career driven toward the stony heart of fashion from the do-it-yourself fringes of the blogosphere, include Sophia Neophitou, editor of the English style bible 10 and a creative force behind the casting of the Victoria’s Secret shows.

“We would never use” Ms. Upton for a Victoria’s Secret show, Ms. Neophitou said by telephone last week from London. And, while Ms. Upton has, in fact, modeled on occasion for the company’s catalog, her look, said Ms. Neophitou, is “too obvious” to be featured in what has become the most widely viewed runway show in the world.

“She’s like a Page 3 girl,” Ms. Neophitou said, referring to the scantily clad voluptuous women featured in The Sun, a London tabloid. “She’s like a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy.”

“For a long time, fashion has been going to celebrities,” Kate Upton says. “Celebrities are on the magazine covers, and nobody wanted models. But why not have a model celebrity? Why not a girl who comes with her own following? Social media brings a personality to models. That’s how consumers today decide what to buy.”

“I studied this,” added Ms. Upton, a Michigan native who was raised in Melbourne, Fla., and who began work at 15, spending her first few years toiling in the lucrative but unglamorous salt mines of catalog modeling.

What Ms. Upton learned was that before Ms. Bündchen grew Angel wings and became Mrs. Tom Brady and a business impresario overseeing a multimillion-dollar empire built on the licensing of everything from lingerie to shower shoes, she was just another runway girl from the first wave of then-new Brazilians, a woman routinely informed she would never make it big in high fashion because her figure was too curvy and her nose was too long.

“People told me I couldn’t be fashion, that I’m just an old-fashioned body girl, only good for swimwear,” Ms. Upton said. “But I knew that I could bring back the supermodel.”

“What can I say?” she added. “I’m relatable.”

[From The NYT]

“She’s like a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy.” YIKES! That was one of the bitchiest things I’ve ever heard. Even Karl Lagerfeld is like “TOO FAR.” But you know what this reminds me of? Blake Lively and her Chanel contract. Everybody thinks Blake is so down-market because she’s blonde and has nice (fake) boobs and she smiles a lot. Kate Upton = Blake Lively. They’re very similar, aren’t they? Lots of ambition, great figures, both are “accessible” and both are NOT “high fashion.”

Here are some photos of last night’s SI party. I like this girl, but she looks kind of busted here, right?

She’s nothing special. Her hair is awful.

    • Crystal says:

Agreed, and I’m still baffled by the surge in her popularity and the fact that she is the only swimsuit model I’ve ever seen who gets a pass on having an undefined midsection that usually shows rolls of fat on the sides. Don’t get me wrong — Kate’s obviously pretty and seems like a nice, funny person. But a dougie video and a pair of small Ds does not a “supermodel” make.

      • Tiffany says:

Rolls of fat? WHAT IN THE WORLD ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

      • OriginalTiffany says:

Crystal, after looking at those links, I’d say another mega photoshop job. She’s got a kind of strange shape, doesn’t she? I’m not a huge fan.

      • Crystal says:

ITA on both counts. She is oddly shaped *for a swimsuit model*. And I don’t get the hype either.

      • OriginalTiffany says:

Yes, I’m not saying she’s ugly or fat or anything. Just not super pretty facially and a strange shape for an SI cover. Too much shop as well.

Is she an apple or a rectangle? She’s got great legs, just no WHR at ALL.

      • Lee says:

Those links should be required viewing – it’s shocking to see the reality of what photoshop does. SI sold a bill of goods on their cover, methinks.

      • Tiffany says:

I can only see one picture that you posted (work restrictions), but there are a ton of photos of her out there where she is in GREAT shape. You can tell in the orange dress above that she doesn’t have a flabby midsection. It’s not like she is Christina Aguilera’s size or anywhere close.

I don’t think that a few pictures can erase the fact that she has a great body. I think women can be a little too hard on other women sometimes.

      • ZenB!tch says:

It looks to me like she’s lost weight. This also explains why her boobs are droopier now and droopier than they should be on a 19 year old.

She does have Angelina waist which totally shows in that dress. She’s not an hourglass. May be an apple shape… thinner limbs thicker midsection.

I think she need some spanx in that dress not because she’s fat but to nip the waist a tad. That dress is not suited to her figure.

However, if NY Fashion doesn’t like her. It makes me love her (as long as she doesn’t make friends with Hefner). I’m offended by the idea that if you look a certain way you should go pose for a skin magazine.

The thing is this girl REALLY looks this way she’s not plastic like Pammy and Kendra (who also has no waist) and all the rest.

She may be more “down market” as in she is more Guess than Giorgio Armani – things don’t hang on her but the comments about Playboy are offensive. She’s not even trashy enough for Miss Hawaiian Tropic. She’s just a normal “big” girl (as in 5’11 size D not as in fat).

      • Eliza says:

Have any of you seen Gisele in person? She’s soooo thin it’s awkward!
Brigette Bardot,Raquel Welch,Ursula Andress and Jayne Mansfield are truly beautiful sexy women…Not these androgynous starving runway hangers!

      • Paul says:

The sour grapes on display here are astounding, and mostly from females! And you wonder why there’s a eating disorder problem among young girls?

I’m not say any of you ladies griping about her looks have an eating disorder. I’m just GUESSING that’s true.

This may be painful to hear, but her look is the male ideal. Sorry. It’s so true.

You think she looks chubby in those videos? My god, I prefer those to her pictures! She’s jiggly because she has boobs. Spectacular boobs.

Undefined midsection? There’s defined and there’s emaciated. Here’s a clue, if you can count your ribs…you’re emaciated.

You think her boobs look saggy? That’s just what they look like when they’re that big…AND REAL!

        Sorry people. She’s the goods.

      • gigi says:

I’m not saying she’s fat (not at all), I’m just saying that for a swimsuit model, she needs to hit the gym more often and aim for better muscle tone. Her mid-section is flabby, her boobs are drooping, and she has no muscle definition in her legs. Basically, it’s obvious that she’s not putting the work in, and she’s just capitalizing on big boobs and a girly face. I think that if you want to be known for a hot body, then you need to work hard at it and not just blind everyone with your tits falling out of a bikini 2 sizes too small.

      • OriginalTiffany says:

I don’t think our “griping” is about US at all. This has nothing to do with me.
BYW-I am happy with myself, and I’d walk a damn run way, who cares? Oh, also, I followed her link and wound up on DS. They hate her over there. That would be dudes. They say she is untoned. Way more criticism on the guy’s site!

For me, its more that she is a very Shopped SI cover. She isn’t curvy, she’s boxy. I just love the old truly amazing SI models. I got SI for years (sports fan) and have always loved the swimsuit edition.
To me she is still a girl, who knows what she’ll look like in a few years. She’s a baby with probable ‘baby fat” in the linked pics.

If you want eating disordered women who REALLY bitch about other women go to the skinny.

I’ve got no problem with Kate, just don’t think she’s as fab as some of the other famed SI cover girls.

      • Annie says:

I don’t think she has lost any weight I think it’s that she looks much thinner in clothes than in a bikini b/c of her body type. “baby fat” is such a myth, you lose that when you stop being, well, a baby. She has the same apple body as Angelina – skinny arms and legs, kind of doughy or undefined midsection and zero hips. But whereas Angelina has a very striking face to make up for the body this girl’s is very, VERY unremarkable. I mean sure she’s “pretty” or whatever but I see girls with this face every day in the supermarket. The only reason she’s getting hype is the whole “barely legal” factor. *wretch, blegh, vomit*

      • loveisblind says:

While I agree that she is a little thicker than most SI girls, she still has a healthy nice body though. It is more of the porn star ilk though.

    • smith says:

I feel like SI submarined themselves.

They took a slightly “controversial” model and then just slapped her on the cover. The styling is wrong (very ill-fitting bikini top), the body and face angles are awkward, and her hair is just silly. It’s like they almost didn’t want to succeed.

    • Bermuda Blues says:

Her breasts are pretty freaking special, from where I am sitting at least.

      • Samigirl says:

I agree. I love her boobs. When I get mine done, I’m bringing her picture.

      • EBitch says:

Those are some flapjack tits…she is in dire need of a lift! No self respecting plastic surgeon would accept money to do that to someone.

    • Jazz Fabulous says:

to me, she is just another mediocire white blonde bimbo. As usual, we are shoved with images of blonde chicks and being told that’s the epitome of beauty. It makes no difference if she poses for Victoria’s Secret or SI, they all look the same.

      I’m so tired of it!

  2. MMF says:

    She looks like Courtney Stoddard.

    • Tapioca says:

Be nice! That’s verging on “You’re a virgin who can’t drive!” harsh, Tai.

I particularly loved this quote from the woman who casts the Victoria’s Secret (yeah, the tits and arse underwear company) runway show, though:

“her look, said Ms. Neophitou, is “TOO OBVIOUS””.

Makes a change from K**ty Karl’s “too fat”!

    • EBitch says:

      HAHAHA…that was pretty great.

  3. normades says:

Amber Heard she is not. That orange dress does her no favors.

  4. Cleveland Girl says:

She seems like a nice, ambitious, harmless young woman working hard to make a name for herself and have a career. I really cannot stand these haters. What purpose does it serve to bash this woman? She landed the cover! That has to say something about her talent, she has a look that people can relate to. And the “Dougie” video is the cutest thing I have ever seen!

    • brin says:

ITA! Good luck to her and NYT should be ashamed.

    • Bermuda Blues says:

That neo woman who made all those awful comments should be ashamed of herself. Even if she’d say those things behind closed doors, to give a quote like that to the New York Times is beyond low class.

If I was managing the Victoria’s Secret brand, this woman would be fired immediately. Her snotty, dismissive, and frankly rude comments were unwarranted and unnecessary – and to allow her name to be published alongside them! As if she’s proud of herself! Horrid.

Oh, and I would not be the least bit suprised to see Kate Upton at next year’s Victoria’s Secret fashion show. Like Kate said – She’s got a following, it would be a great way for Victoria’s Secret to secure headlines and make amends with an up and coming model.

    • storyteller says:

Agreed. She’s harmless. The haters raging against her cover are revealing more about themselves than they are about her.

      • OriginalTiffany says:

Who is a “hater” here? I see no hate.
I do see general disdain for the AMOUNT of photoshop we are seeing in all media today. Why can’t these girls look good enough on their own? Why shop them into something they aren’t.

Kate’s fine, she just isn’t as perfect as SI would like us to think. None of them are, they might as well just computer CGI some chicks up for the issue at this rate.

    • smith says:

      Yeah, agree.

She’s 19. She had the moxy and smarts to make a name for herself on her own.

The fashion-powers-that-be want to be the ones who “discover” new talent and look down their noses at models who have the audacity to self-promote.

I wonder if that Victoria’s Secret woman realizes how utterly awful and snobby she sounds.

  5. Sarko says:

    That’s a misnomer
VS and Chanel are different beasts
And Blake actually has more of the high fashion/angular looks hence HF mag, covers than Kate (who do I think is also pretty).

  6. Ari says:

Its the shoes they totally destroy what could have been a trashy yet fashionable look lol

  7. girl says:

I don’t care one way or the other but damn, could that bikini bottom be any lower? Is labia cleavage going to be the new thing?

  8. merski says:

I think this girl is very pretty when she’s wearing less makeup. Very nice body.
    People are mean. :/

    • I like my dirt clean says:

Agreed, people love to be mean. Body dismorphia anyone? If this girl is fat then forgive me, then most of you are morbidly obese. Let’s get real. Re you really pisses that she got photoshopped or are you happy that she’s not perfect so you can feel better about yourself. Body image as it relates to the fashion industry has been out of whack and disproportionate for years. Whether it’s women or men criticizing a women and her body it is just as disgusting.
      Get a grip.

  9. cr says:

I don’t have a problem with her, I have a problem with SI’s photoshopping the cover so she doesn’t look like herself.

  10. Noi says:

her face is ps to much it pops off the page it’s like the copy and paste(not saying thats not her body)girl is pretty

like most up and comers it’ll be awhile before she finds style/get big name stylist so free pass for me

  11. Blue says:

    Chicken Legs!!
    That quote was totally bitchy.
She seems like the nice girl next door which isn’t a bad thing. I guess they want the modeling world to consist of tall, anorexic looking 14 yo girls, bordering on unattractive (to me a lot of them are not pleasing to look at) These fashion people don’t seem to realize that people are sick of looking at these sickly looking “women” (most are in their teens) with no shape or body fat.

  12. Blue says:

Gisele was considered “too curvy” ?

    • Oi says:

That’s what I was thinking. What about Heidi? She’s really not that curvy either. VS is screwed up.

  13. Tiffany27 says:

Her body is AMAZING, but her face has always looked kinda off to me. I want her and Leo D. to date. She seems like his type.

  14. Anna says:

She looks so much better in live picture than still.

  15. Riana says:

I think when you model for a high fashion brand there should be something unique about you which links you to that brand.

Blake more than smiling a lot and being blonde is a total California girl. Put her with Missoni, but Chanel? Non.

Furthermore her spread was so dull. Blake isn’t an especially good actress, an especially beautiful girl, or an especially stylish or unique individual…just not really special at all…which is why people complained.

(that and she’s campaigning like HELL to be a fashionista, just like her campaigning to be an AMAZING actress)

  16. Happy21 says:

She’s pretty. I’m not gonna hate but I think she’s just meh. She has a nice body but many women do. There’s just nothing overly special about her.

And Blake Lively, in my opinion, is for sure more high fashion than this girl!

  17. Who ever wrote that article is a raving bitch! I think she’s a knockout who has parlayed social media into what will undoubtedly be a very successful modelling career so she’s smart. I’m sure i’m not alone in thinking she’s way prettier than Gisele..

  18. Me says:

    Not fair.

  19. Abigail says:

I think there is a big difference between the fashion industry’s response to Blake Lively and Kate. Blake Lively does not seem to really represent the Chanel brand — how does she appeal to actual Chanel customers?
Although Kate may not be the most unique or beautiful model, she is absolutely the kind of girl that every single man would have a complete crush on if he knew her. Moreover, I think everyone — men, women, consumers — are sick of the constant perpetuation of anorexic, underage models. Yes the big names are beautiful and unusual, but take a lot at some photos from NY fashion week. Most of the runway girls look horrifically underfed. Even the VS girls rarely do the major runway shows. Social media is finally allowing people to express and idolize different types of beauty and the fashion industry is losing its monopoly on setting standards for what is attractive and desirable. Of course they’re pissed about Kate’s rise.
And Blue, yes, sadly, in the post late-90s anorexia chic trend, Giselle and Heidi Klum were considered too curvy for the fashion industry.

    • normades says:

      Excellent comment.

I also think the Blake Lively comparission is apples and oranges. Blake doesn’t appeal to Chanel’s real cliental while I’m sure Kate appeals to SI’s readers!

  20. Talie says:

They should’ve just put Amber Heard on the cover.

  21. Jackie says:

she does look exactly like a wife of a pro athlete….they hit the nail on the hit with that one!

    so generic looking.

    • Noi says:

what does a pro athlete wife look like that’s to general of a description
do they look any different than other wives?

      &&

      whats generic about her
that’s she pretty, blond, curvy(although in the last pic she looks like a straight line )

  22. T.C. says:

she looks like a completely different person on the cover. didn’t know she was just a teenager. gee SI you use a teen as your cover girl for the swimsuit issue?

  23. Kaboom says:

The one thing I don’t like about her getting the SI cover is the fact that they picked such a lousy shot. She has many classier ones in swim wear.

    • Mari says:

This looks like something thatbwould be hanging on the wqll of a car repair shop in my country…trashy, but it is the magazine’s fault, not hers.
About her body, she to me seems a meatier version of Brooklyn Decker’s. The hips are a bit weird. Anyway, kudos to her for changing things a bit. My only complain is that maybe the SI swimsuit editions seemed classier before, way before like in the 80’s. I remember seein the magazine with the likes of Paulina Porizkova, Elle Mcpherson, etc. And the pictures were great. Maybe in this decade, things need to be more In Your Face to get men to buy the issue.

  24. heatheradair says:

Since when did an SI cover model need to be “high fashion” and “up market?”

Aren’t the t*ts the whole point?

  25. D says:

So basically bitchy fashion people hate girls with awesome healthy bodies for not looking like starved 12 year olds? Not surprising. That said, I actually think Blake Lively’s controversial face is pretty high-fashion…dye her hair brown and she could pass for Giselle’s little sister.

    • Sarko says:

      IKR
She actually does look like one of Gis’ younger sisters.
The 2 youngest, but the blonder one
I’m not sure if it’s Gabriella or Rafaella.

  26. kimberly says:

She looks like Lindsay Lohan in lower pics in the face with the make up .

She’s pretty in that trashy california girl kinda way. You know the generic blonde hair and light eyes. Her body is nice because it’s thicker than other models, but I still don’t see 50’s pin up in the face, just socal trashy peroxided hair.

sorry I’m a girl and I can’t get past the really bad dye job and limp strands when she was clearly trying to sophisticated. Her critics aren’t wrong, she’s really trashy looking just like Blake Lively.

She’s good for sports ill, but as for being a real fashion model? IDTS

  27. nikzilla37 says:

She does look trashy in those pics but she’ll get a new stylist and hair/makeup team and then she’ll look like a completely different gal. Watch.

  28. storyteller says:

Women calling other (young, blonde, hot) women trashy and low brow, what else is new? Of course it’s a woman complaining and being bitchy about Kate Upton. Don’t think you’d hear many guys complaining and that’s kind of the point. This is Sports Illustrated for pete’s sake, not Harper’s Bazaar.

  29. JudyJudyJudy says:

she’ll be marrying sean bean any day now.

  30. RobN says:

I’m not getting her at all. Yeah, she’s got great boobs and guys buying this magazine aren’t looking for anything more than that, but her looks are really generic and untouched photos do show that she’s got a really soft midsection.

I like models that look a little unique; I live in California and could walk out my door and in an hour I could find you 20 girls that look just like this.

    • ZenB!tch says:

She actually looks like a friend of mine except my friend is no longer 19 and is closer to 5’8″

  31. Patricia says:

Can’t we all just get along????????

    Seriously though … who cares.

  32. Amy says:

This just floored me. I see nothing remarkable about this girl. She has an average looking face and is the most “shapeless” SI cover girl ever. Bar Rafaeli is another story. I think she is absolutely gorgeous as are so many prior SI covers.

  33. Jover says:

Interesting comments all; I like kate’s comments about fashion going to celebs and mag covers going to celebs; If it’s Catherine Deneuve thats one thing Blake Lively is totally budget and should never being doing Chanel, maybe Payless.
There have been other articles about models using social media to get themselves out there Heide Lindgren is one; I’m of the old school – actresses should act; musicians/singers should do music, and models should do the modeling rep brands cosmetic companies etc.
I’m sorry seeing someone like SOfia Vegara doing Covergirl and Pepsi doesn’t make me want to necessarily buy those products; it reinforces the notion that her management team is cashing in every way they can before she fades – honestly, nothing against her, but is she really that great of an actress? So what if Kate Upton gets some attention go for it. I’d rather see her on SI cover than Beyonce.

  34. marie says:

She is pretty in a plain way and looks like the average girl. The world is full of blondes who look like her. Her boobs look really jiggly and weird though….I doubt they are fake. Fake boobs do not look like that.

  35. Tierra says:

I feel like this is another Lana Del Ray moment. I have no clue who this chick is or what a “dougie video” is and yet she’s been all over the news.
I dont usually follow models but why all the sudden attention and hate?
I dont see anything wrong with her body other than the excessive photo-shopping.

    • NaomiCampbellsPhone says:

I’m in the same boat as you. I don’t know anything about Lana Del Rey other than she has weird lips and the only Dougie video I’ve seen had Pandas in it.

  36. Aurelia says:

Granted, this kid has a fantastic rack.

She kind of reminds me of a newer version of Eva Herzogova when she was a rookie on the scene in up mode.

I would rather look at this kate kid than transgended giselle bunchen.

  37. yep says:

i think shes pretty. would love to have her body. and that dougie video shows she has a fun happy personality.

  38. Camille (The original) says:

She’s cute but very generic. And she is another one with a case of ‘the chicken legs’ syndrome.

  39. NeoCleo says:

I’ll tell all of you on this website who are putting this woman down for her looks–All y’all are crazy!

I wouldn’t mind looking that bad! I’ll take her “awful hair” and the “nothing special” face any day.

  40. Devon says:

Are you all crazy? Chica is smoking and we’d all kill for a body like that. She puts those anorexic twigs to shame.

  41. Isa says:

She reminds me of Brooklyn Decker, with her wide midsection and boobs that look like they’d flop down to her belly button if she took her top off.
I think her face looks very pretty in the orange dress pictures.
But I don’t know what SI was thinking with that cover shot. They could’ve done better. I guess they were too busy focusing on her crotch than how weird her face looks.
And somewhere out there, Dan Rad is going to walk by this magazine and shiver.

  42. Elizabeth says:

    @ Cheryl
After watching the YouTube video of her bikini runway walk, I thought “My God, I hope she wears a helmet next time because if one of those boobs gets loose, she gonna get a broken nose”. A real jiggle show. But I’d rather see her than an anorexic 14 year old. Kate Upton is a real girl and a pretty one.

  43. Julie says:

Geez, half the VS models aren’t anything special. This girl at least has a pretty face and real boobs to actually put in a bra.. I know Giselle isn’t with VS anymore but she looks like a man.

  44. lucy says:

Please if this chick can become a supermodel than so can my History Teacher.

  45. Riana says:

I had no opinion of her before this (frankly knew nothing about her at all) but after seeing the YouTube links.

…shouldn’t you be shaped like a model to model? I don’t mean she’s not skinny enough but that is one very unappealing midsection, it’s just very very square. I think SI was banking on her controversy more than her looks considering they pointed to her vagina with that teeny bottom and shopped the hell out of her stomach and chest.

So…someone else who wants to do a job they’re not really qualified for and is hoping for enough ‘fans’ to overwhelm their own flaws. Becoming a real trend these days.

  46. renee says:

I think she is very pretty. Looks like real boobs to me. So, she is hated on cuz she is not a “real” model? I am trying to get all the hate. Then, the comments about her wide hips?? huh? Either models are too skinny or skinny with bolt-ons everything unrealistic. At least this girl has hips! Nowhere need normal-looking at all. I literally got this in the mail today (husband has an SI subscription) and didn’t think anything of her other than thinking it was just another SI Swimsuit cover. I don’t think she looks worse than the other girls. But the comments on this site and other about her wide hips really get to me. So she actually has hips? Other comments on other sites were mentioning that she has “wide hips” like that is bad thing.

  47. Kim says:

She is very cheap looking. Sports Illustrated swim issue so isnt what it used to be. Bring back the REAL MODELS/SUPERMODELS!

  48. smith says:

I do think she is very pretty. She looks much better when her face isn’t caked with make-up. There are some pictures out there (some in the link Crystal gives above) where she is absolutely caked in so much make-up she would put a drag queen to shame. She doesn’t need pounds of make-up on her, she’s 19!

Also, in the pictures above, the orange dress looks sloppy and ill-fitting on her, her hair looks messy and it looks like her eyes are drooping. She looks like Courtney Stodden in these pics and that is NOT a good thing. She is too beautiful to look so cheap. But everyone makes fashion faux pas and I just think this is one. She is making some fashion mistakes right now (mostly hair and make-up wise) but I think she’ll get better as she gets older and gets more experience.

I would kill to have her body. Her Esquire shoot is much better than her SI shoot.

  49. Eliza says:

I Love Kate! So happy to see some Boobs and Arse! I saw the girl at the Superbowl and she is Awsome! Obviously the anorexic biyatches of the runway are worried that curves are back!

  50. ZenB!tch says:

In summation…. maybe there is a reason those Eastern European models with one name are unknown outside the fashion industry. They are boring. No one cares. If Kate gets rid of those girls… she’s doing everyone a favor.

At least people are talking about her. No one talked much about Irina and when they did it was just in reference to Rolando or Ronaldo (I always get that wrong, sorry).

  51. MaxxHotness says:

At least she looks like she eats and like she is a normal person that you could go hang out with… Very approachable and relateable. I think she has a body that could be very attainable to the avg ample female. She may not be high fashion but how many of us normal girls are… And goodness this is sports illustrated a sports and typically guy magazine they wanna see attainable girls not high fashion lol

  52. JennJenn says:

Did SI hire somebody from Playboy to do their annual swimsuit issue?

  53. ldel says:

I don’t see any of the Victorias Secret models as high fashion; to me they all look like swimsuit models. And, I don’t see anything chubby about Kate Upton.

  54. Di says:

She is basically a kid! From what I understand she is only 19!

  55. colt13 says:

I have been following her since the dougie video and think she is lovely.

  56. Bej says:

Ugh, I don’t understand this whole cult of becoming famous/successful through self promotion, whether you have the talent or not. Or in this case the body. Yes she has decent natural boobs, but a supermodels body? I don’t see it. Maybe she just needs more experience to know how to work her angles & shape to her advantage. But it says she’s been doing swimsuit stuff for ages, so I can’t understand why this SI cover is so unflattering, unless she really isn’t cover worthy & the fame/success she’s earned is another case of someone lacking the talent gaining automatic qualification through just having a huge Twitter following & Internet fans. Self promotion trumps legit career path? Honestly puzzles me :/

  57. Adrien says:

Kate is alright. She’s cute, nice rack, nothing special facialwise, but she’s perky. She’s very commercial and not for high fashion and VF has nothing to do with high fashion. If I were to choose between her and Adriana Lima or Rosie Huntington, I’d pick Kate. She’s a safe choice, like American cheddar. Adriana or Rosie are like Roquefort blue cheese.

  58. Isa says:

She has a horrible runway walk. Luckily, with those boobs bouncing around no one notices. haha.

  59. Mari says:

Gisele was curvy and had more muscle at a time. She got thinner and now she has lost whatever waist she had. Well, it is not like models need a waist, most are thin anyway. I do thin that gisele and some other great models do not need perfect faces for high fashion, they need to be malleable and chamaleonic.
Here is a link about great models of the xx century. Interesting. Scroll down for gisele. Let us see if the link goes…

  60. Snowflake says:

SI is not targeted to high-fashion guys, it’s target market is American sports fans. And what do American sports guys like? Blonds with boobs. High fashion and SI are two totally different markets. SI models actually look like real HOT women! In high fashion, as long as you have a unique look, you don’t have to be pretty. She’s perfect as a SI model. People are hateful and mean, the girl’s pretty! And most American men don’t mind a little sag. They know with big boobs, you get a little sag sometimes. big deal, you want perfect big boobs, go buy a pair of implants!i guarantee you, SI fans couldn’t give a crap about her “sagginess.” The girl is smoking, give credit where credit is due. And think about how hurt you would be if people talked about you like that and some of the comments on here!

  61. risa says:

The bottom of the bikini is so ridiculous. Makes her body look weird.

    • Emma says:

the bottoms are way too low. Make me feel like her vag is going to pop out at any second.
but dudes like it I guess.

  62. Emma says:

    I think she’s adorable.
Are her boobs real? They lay like they are. If they are real, I dig it.

  63. eternalcanadian says:

Those baps cannot be real. I can see the solid outline around them like what you see in augmentations. And they look so odd on the side. Just not normal baps, jmo. And thanks for adding to the “ew, no public hair” for gals older than 12 years old with that kind of bottom! Yegads, SI is making their swimsuit issue more and more pornographic as the years go by. I miss the SI Swimsuit issue of the old days (go through the archive at SI) where gals actually had curves and wore swimsuits that didn’t require 100% hair removal from all body parts.

  64. tali says:

meh….not in the mood to analyze how modelesque she is other than to say she favors michelle williams/taylor swift/amber heard type and that looking at other photos her boobs hang low for a 19 yo she needs more support in her bikini tops (i know this because i’m a big chested girl myself) nice non anorexic bod tho

  65. MST says:

Wow, ladies, bitchy much? She looks okay, nothing unique, but there’s no reason for the hostility. And since when are Victoria’s Secret and Sports Illustrated upmarket?

  66. Justin says:

Really? She is smoking hot! The majority of the Vic. Sec. swimsuit models, that look hot in their photo spreads, look like heroin addicts in person! if anyone says Gizel Buncen is better looking than Sarah Upton, they are either gay, a woman or lying. Fact of the matter is sex sells, and 99% of heterosexual men would jump at a chance with a woman like that.

  67. Lisa says:

She’s pretty and has a super fit body, two things most models must have so… go here I guess? My problem with the cover are those awful bikini bottoms and the amount of airbrushing in that area. Apparently she doesn’t have a pubic bone? I guess natural human anatomy is no longer considered desirable.

  68. danielle says:

I think she has a pretty face – and I think Gisele is a bit busted in the face. Not crazy about Bar’s either.

  69. iseepinkelefants says:

What is this trend with buying bikini’s too small? I’m not even talking about the bottoms (ridic) but if the triangle don’t fit over your boobs then you need to go up in size. I really don’t get the trend with having a top that sits on top of your boobs, it’s supposed to go underneath them. It’s so trashy looking. Like you can’t afford a proper suit.

This girl is just meh. She is pretty but not abnormally so (like model-models). She’s freaking swimsuit though. Lay off. I mean she doesn’t need to be oddly beautiful. I think Bar has old lady/butterface face but she made it on (SI Cover). It doesn’t matter what swimsuit girls look like. They hardly ever crossover like Gisele did (most of the VS girls, while pretty, are not ever seen walking high fashion runway). And besides Gisele isn’t very pretty either (man face) but Leo catipulted her to the status she is now. If we really want to start comparing, remember Cindy, Christy, Elle, they were all catalog AND runway. If you classified them now none of them would fit in with today’s standard for quirky beauty and nobody would sign them for high fashion. They’re not odd looking enough.

  70. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I guess I’m the only one who doesn’t know who she is? I’ve had two dental surgeries within a week, so right now, if it isn’t Tylenol-2, yogurt or Felix The Cat episodes, I don’t know about it. Guess I’m more out of touch than ever.

  71. g says:

kate upton is wayyyyy prettier than blake lively

  72. G says:

    Kate is gorgeous.

  73. Too Much Criticism From women here who actually don’t look any better than Ms. Kate.
I suggest you people move on with your pathetic lives because if you continue being like that you might end up unconsciously hurting your mom already. You’re not any better than Ms. kate. In fact you don’t even look good enough at all. A lot of women who are insecure to her are nothing but an old looking woman.

Obviously Ms. kate is better than a lot of women in the world. Including those who comment as if they are Model potential themselves, which is not true. Some say they are already happy about who they are but the truth is they aren’t. That’s why they are here to make other people look miserable so they would have someone to share their miserable life with.

So if you actually think Ms kate has an ugly body because of some fat you see. Why not check your own? those hair, dots, lines in that stinky old body. You can also check the people around you, your couch potato mom or dad.

Haters Gonna Hate But what do you actually get? Haha
She’s just becoming more popular 🙂

So if you think this offensive, it is because your thoughts are offensive.

    • Serena says:

Oh Justice! I find it more disturbing when folks like you go to bat for strangers they will never meet or know. People who could care less about you, ever, in any way.
But, to each their own! You ffind her beautiful, they find her, meh. That’s not “hating” that’s life.

On the mean spirit of bad mouthing Upton and others… When you lay yourself out like a piece of ice cream cake, you’re going to get eaten or melt. Those are you’re options.
